Week 3

14th to 18th September 2014

Chapter 1 – Section 2:

The objectives of this week were to:

  • Explore the major fields of psychology.
  • Discuss how the specialists in some fields of psychology serve people’s needs.

In order to have the students be more involved in their learning process and try to have them active participants in the classroom, I decided to divide them into random groups, each group was responsible for explaining and presenting one of the specialties in psychology. This was considered as a class activity since they were given class time to work on it. After the activity was concluded, each group presented their work to the class and we had a class discussion.

In order to enhance the student’s teamwork and presentation skills, please note that I will be performing classwork activities similar to the one we did this week regularly. I believe that students should not be passive recipients of knowledge and should always strive to look for information themselves rather than just learn about it from the teacher.

After they concluded their presentations, I went through the eight specialties again and explained the main points so as to make sure that non of the students are confused or missing any points about the section.

Moreover, this week I asked the school counselor to come to the class and talk to the students about psychology, the major fields of psychology, and about psychology of the criminal mind. Because of her background, she was able to give the students an insight of what really happens in the field of psychology. This was a good practice for the students because it allows them to link the theories we learn in class to real life; therefore enriching their educational experience.

Looking Ahead:

Next week we will be starting a new section in the book.

Friday 12th September 2014

Dear Grade 12,

As discussed in our last class, please note that your group activity presentations are due on Monday 15th September 2014. You are expected to present your work on the chart that I distributed in class. Please find bellow the instructions for the activity.  I have also attached a copy of the rubric I will be using to assess your presentations and work.

  • Review the information in the text about your assigned specialty.
  • Create an advertising bulletin board promoting your assigned specialty. The board should appeal to high school students considering psychology as a major or to those considering choosing a specialty.
  • As such, bulletins should include:
    •   Basic information about the discipline of psychology,
    •   And relevant, appealing information about the   specialty.
    • Then have groups present their boards to the class.

Thank you and have a lovely weekend,

Farah.

  • Understand the meaning of Psychology as a science,
  • Examine the difference between behavior and mental processes,
  • Understand and explore the goals of psychology,
  • Explore the possibility of changing one’s behavior,
  • Understand how psychology could be viewed as a science and relate it to the natural sciences,
  • And understand the fundamentals of Psychological research.

We were able to finish Chapter 1, Section one and will be starting Section 2 next week.

The students were given an assignment in the form of reflection questions to answer related to the content they learned in class. However if they choose to hand them in as a hard copy they need to be typed and printed neatly.

Week 1

1st to 4th September 2014.

Introduction.

The objective of the first week was to welcome the students back to school and to familiarize them with the class rules and expectations. We went through the student/parent handbook where the students were introduced to the subject, teacher, objectives, and learning outcomes of the course.

Actual content covered:

  • During the first week we discussed what is Psychology and whether or not students believe it is an important science. Each student was asked to write a paragraph about what they thought psychology is.
  • Also, working together as a class, we brainstormed a list of theories and topics related to the field of psychology.
  • Then, using the list as a starting point, I guided the students in a discussion about how psychology impacts people’s everyday lives. As well as how they believed their own lives are affected by the science of psychology.
  • Moreover, we discussed the theory of Nature vs. Nurture, and we had a small debate about which one of them affects people’s development more that the other and why.

Thank you and best regards,
