Hey guys,

This week we started watching “The Truman Show” movie as part of your movie critique assignment related to Chapter 4 (Socialization of the Individual). The objective of the critique is:

  • Understand the effects of the society on the individual
  • Individual’s different concepts of reality
  • What forces and agents shape our mentality and how? (Christof controlling nearly every aspect of Truman’s socialization)
  • Relate the movie to Goffman’s theory of dramaturgy and impression management

Hey guys,

So this week we’ve started a new unit in Sociology and we’re done with the first section (Personality Development).

As we’ve discussed, you’ll be having your first quiz this semester next Monday the 23rd, covering Section 1.

You also had a classwork on Thursday on section 1, you can find it attached here in case you need a soft copy. Ch 4 Sec 1 Assignment

You also were introduced to your new interdisciplinary project for this semester. You have been introduced to the project in three different sessions.

First session: class debate on whether or not people with mental and physical disabilities be included in our small community.

Second session: you’ve been divided into 7 groups with a representation of each discipline in each group, and you’ve been asked to brainstorm how each discipline could contribute to the issue of disabilities.

Third session: we went through the project description and talked about the 5 phases of the project and the role of each discipline in it.

As Sociology class, you will be receiving a rubric made specifically for your discipline covering what you will be doing exactly and how you will be graded.

Also, we will be visiting the “Al Ghad Al Moshreq” foundation next Tuesday as we’re launching the first phase of the project.

Hey guys,

As you already know, I won’t be able to come to school next Monday the 26th of January, and so, Ms. Farah El Said has thankfully agreed to take over the class and have you do some work that I’ve asked her to give you. So, I urge you not give her a hard time, ESPECIALLY YOU ZEINA, YES YOU 😀 (just kidding)

Since we’ve agreed this week that we will start a new chapter (not included in the Semester test) next week. So, the work I have prepared for you will be on Chapter 4 Section 1 (Yes Farida, I’m actually applying your suggestion. I was convinced.)

Please do not hesitate to contact me on my e-mail have you got any inquiry or need my help with anything.

I hope you have a great long weekend!

Love and respect,

Ms. Sarah Akl

I had the pleasure to be handed over the Sociology course for this year after Mr. Rajeev had to leave for personal unfortunate reasons. So, this was officially our first week together. Things have been great so far, and I’m actually looking forward to more classes, discussions, projects and self-development, for us all.

You can find below some of the main rules of conduct to make things clear and put everything in perspective for everyone to avoid any miscommunication and future misperceptions.

What we covered this week:

**This week we have started discussing Chapter 2 in the book “Cultural Diversity And Conformity”. We have so far been through section 1 that discusses: what is culture?, the relation between culture and society, and the five main components of culture. We have also had several interesting discussions in class in regards to the topic, which I really encourage and enjoy in class, so yea, keep them coming.

I would very much like for you to do the following during the weekend:

  • Study for a quiz next Monday (24th of November) covering the first section (You should study from both, class notes and book)
  • Write a couple of paragraphs describing a culture to which you belong. For example, you might write about a club or a team of which you are a part. (This is to be submitted next Monday as well)

If you have any further inquires, please do not hesitate to e-mail me.

Have a great weekend!

Ms. S
